Biology and population features of a rare species of Pseudopimelodidae from the Upper Paraná River Basin Biota Neotropica
Esguícero,André Luiz Henríques; Arcifa,Marlene Sofia.
Streams contain an expressive fraction of the South American fish diversity, mostly composed of small-sized, endemic, and rare species. Populational, reproductive, and diet aspects of Microglanis garavelloi were studied, aiming to make a wide characterization of this species of bumblebee catfish. This is an endemic species of the Upper Paraná River Basin, and the only representative of the genus in the watershed. It is a littoral-dweller of small rivers, with asymptotic length of 34.1 mm and a population mostly composed of individuals with 20-30 mm of standard length. This species presents high fecundity and mortality rate, and low longevity and growth rate. It is a total spawner, October to February being the spawning period, and probably has brood care...

OceanDocs
Turki, O.; M'Hetli, M.; Chriki, A.; Kraiem, M.M..

Rodríguez-Ramírez, A.; Nivia-Ruíz, J.; Garzón-Ferreira, J..
Within the framework of the CARICOMP(Caribbean Coastal Marine Productivity) monitoring program, a study of the Avicennia germinans mangrove formation of Chengue bay (Tayrona Natural Park, Colombia) was performed between June 1995 and July 1996, based on the evaluation of structural and functional characteristics at three monitoring plots (10 x 10 m). The structure of the studied formation is coincident with that of fringing forests of the Caribbean region in having small trees (dbh=11.3 cm, total height=6.3 m) and high densities (16.3 trunks/0.01 ha). During the monitored period there was a low mortality rate (0.7 trees/year) and there were significant increases of the circumferences at breast height (as well as of the variables derived from this measure)....

Comparison of methods for stock assessment of European hake Merluccius merluccius in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern mediterranean) ArchiMer
Aldebert, Yvonne; Recasens, Laura.
European hake Merluccius merluccius is the main commercial demersal species in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean). This fish is exploited by French and Spanish trawler fleets and by small-scale fisheries using gillnets and longlines. Data on landings and the demography of catches by type of gear are now available for the period 1988-1991. The assessment of the hake stock was carried out using methods of virtual population analysis (VPA), or cohort analysis, based respectively on mean pseudocohorts and cohorts by age. The results of these VPA were then analysed and compared from a methodological point of view. The general results have confirmed previous studies with regard to the level of exploitation of the species. The two methods gave quite...

Coral reefs of Gorgona Island, Colombia, with special reference to corallivores and their influence on community structure and reef development OceanDocs
Glynn, P.W.; Prahl, H. von; Guhl, F..

As a contribution to the biological knowledge about the sea fan Gorgonia ventalina and the use of this information as a tool to generate conservation and management strategies for this threatened species, a study about its annual growth rate, in different reef areas in Santa Marta and the National Natural Park Tayrona in the Colombian Caribbean took place. Manual measurements of 35 colonies were analyzed and images of 11 colonies were recorded in the beginning and in the end of the field stage. The annual growth rate varies among colonies and areas where measurements were taken. The average annual growth rate obtained with both of the methods was high and oscillated between 7.6 and 8.1 cm/year in height and between 6.9 and 8.3 cm/year wide. The total area...

Demographic structure of a threatened palm (Euterpe edulis Mart.) in a fragmented landscape of Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Melito,Melina Oliveira; Faria,José Cláudio; Amorim,André Márcio; Cazetta,Eliana.
At the northern limits of the range of the palm species Euterpe edulis there is an endemic ecotype, known as the "Bahia" ecotype, which is distinguished by its reddish crownshaft and low seed production. Unfortunately, little is known about its demographic characteristics. Therefore, we contrasted the density of E. edulis populations in the Una region, in the southern part of the Bahia state, Brazil, with that of other populations of the species in southern and southeastern Brazil. In addition, within the Una region, we compared a long-protected forest fragment (F1) with three recently protected fragments (F2, F3, and F4), in terms of demographic parameters and plant size, in order to determine what influence, if any, time since protection has on E. edulis...

Depth-dependent gene flow in Gulf of Mexico cold seep Lamellibrachia tubeworms (Annelida, Siboglinidae) ArchiMer
Cowart, Dominique; Halanych, Kenneth M.; Schaeffer, Stephen W.; Fisher, Charles R..
Lamellibrachia vestimentiferan tubeworms form aggregations at hydrocarbon cold seeps in the deep Gulf of Mexico (GoM), creating structures that provide living space for other fauna. In the GoM, three Lamellibrachia taxa vary in morphology and depth ranges: Lamellibrachia luymesi (300–950 m), Lamellibrachia sp. 1 (950–2,604 m), and Lamellibrachia sp. 2 (1,175–3,304 m). While Lamellibrachia sp. 2 is consistently identified as a separate species, L. luymesi and sp. 1 cannot be discriminated using barcoding markers cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and large ribosomal subunit rDNA (16S). To determine if limited gene flow was a factor in the formation of these taxa, we employed more quickly evolving markers, including mitochondrial cytochrome B (CYTB),...

Hernandez Avila, Ivan.
Deep-water hydrothermal vent host high-biomass communities based on chemoautotrophy supported by the metabolic activity of free-living and symbiotic bacteria associated to invertebrates, especially megafauna. Knowledge on the mechanisms of dispersal and the life cycle of vent species is essential to our understanding of the vent communities in terms of distribution, structure and temporal variation. In this study, I present some advances regarding the dispersal and life cycle of a dominant species of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) vent ecosystems, the alvinocaridid shrimp Rimicaris exoculata, and other related species. The methodological approaches applied include morphological descriptions of larvae, analysis of population biology and reproduction, and...
